Strong Couples-Strong Children is a free program to support new or expectant parents with their relationship and other kinds of changing needs such as jobs, housing, and childcare.
This program is for unmarried couples in Durham, 18 and older, who are expecting a baby or have a baby less than 3 months old. The program assists these parents with relationship skill sessions, family care services and fatherhood support.
Program Mission
The mission of Strong Couples – Strong Children is to strengthen relationship bonds among economically disadvantaged, unmarried expectant or new parents. The purpose is to create a more stable family so that children will grow up in a safe and secure environment with both parents involved in their lives.

- Focus and capitalize on couple/family strengths
- Choice is key - participation is voluntary
- Focus on couples, not just mothers or fathers
- Comprehensive, intensive and time-limited approach (6 months)
- Dignity and respect of program participant is primary
- Use program curriculum content that is informed by best available research and program experience
Collaboration effort
Strong Couples-Strong Children is a collaborative effort between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work, Durham County Health Department and Durham County Cooperative Extension Services.
